The British and Americans go to war over the right of free trade on the ocean, the impressment of American sailors and British support for raiding Native Americans in the Northwest. The British are busy fighting Napoleon in Europe and can only manage a defensive war in 1812. The Americans attempt a three-pronged invasion of Canada which fails miserably. By mid-1813, Commandant Perry has built a small fleet on Lake Erie and is ready to sail out and challenge British domination of the lake.
