British General Howe leads the main British army on a campaign to capture the Patriot capital of Philadelphia. Howe soundly defeats Washington at the Battle of Brandywine, but Washington almost defeats Howe in a surprise attack at Germantown. The British capture Philadelphia, but fail to destroy Washington's army.
